In parenthood there are battles everywhere. Parenting magazines and manuals tell us to learn to choose them.

Still, when I walked into the shoe store with the boys I had a defined notion of what shoes we were going to avoid. Light-up shoes. The boys have had them before and I was ready to move past them.
