Bigger and bigger bites

Posted in Momma B | 7 Comments »

Back in December I wrote about taking small bites towards a possible summer triathlon. Well the first small bite was really a big bite itself- running a 5k. You can read about the start of the journey HERE.

A few years ago my friend Debbie and I walked a 5k – and one time in college my friend Shelly and cousin Leslie and I went “running” with our guy friends. Yeah, we made it like 1/2 mile and then walked to get bagels. Besides that I had not done any kind of running for years. And I do mean years. I was the kind of girl who ate whatever she wanted with limited physical exercise (unless you count dancing at clubs on Fridays/Saturdays and in my apartment). I mean, in junior high I got caught forging notes for P.E. excusing me OUT of running. Not tennis, not swimming, not weight lifting. Just running.

I just never thought I had it in me.

Well, I’m proud to say that as of Saturday I’ve run my first 5k. RUN. As in, besides the first five minutes, I RAN the entire thing. Hills and all.

I finished 18th in my age category and 251st overall. My official run time was 35:18 but from start to finish line it was about 34:03 (we were in the back of the starting line-up). And on top of that I’d been sick for two weeks and hadn’t run leading up to it.

Congrats to Annie, Autumn, Lyndsy and Emily who all rocked the run!

So now, that HUGE bite of a sprint triathlon doesn’t look so daunting. If only I didn’t have to wear a swimsuit….

(you can follow my training progress at: Shelly’s Daily Mile and I welcome ANY motivations!!)

Will says,

Life is funny. Every time I sit down at the computer to update my blog I think of something else I should be doing and get distracted. Or the kids come up and want to type (they are REALLY into sending and receiving emails, hint, hint). I have lots of posts I want to get up. E is home this weekend (he’s been sorta out of town) so hopefully I’ll have some time then. Then again, life is funny!

In the meantime Will has been full of hilarious sayings that I wanted to write down. Here are a few:

(the other day while getting ready for preschool)
“Mom, I don’t want to go to school. I want to see the world.”

(the other night after I’d vacuumed up the house)
“I’d like to say it it’s a beautiful evening, but I’m too worried about the confetti.”

(to E while he was leaving for work)

“Dad, you are legen-wait for it- dary.”

(while discussing using a tissue to wipe our noses)
“You know Mom, I’d like to use a tissue but my nose thinks my shirt is a better idea.”

And most mornings I hear this:

“It is a gorgeous morning Mom. What adventure are you taking us on today? See, it’s gorgeous outside. That means adventure.”

Thank you.

Thank you to whoever was listening to my tired mommy prayer last night.

It worked.

E slept through the night.

The boys slept until six.

I got six hours of uninterrupted sleep.

I’m now ready for whatever life is gonna throw at me today. Or sneeze at me.

(PS – I did take a bath and am no longer wearing snot ridden clothing – for those who were worried!)
